Universe26 is a collection of enterprises being designed for resilience in the absence of traditional economic growth.
The reasons for creating enterprises in this lens are not new: Global Biodiversity is in decline, and Global Population is trending toward shrinking; meanwhile, Economies are still running on the momentum of cheap resource extraction and enormous population growth that has marked the last couple centuries of thinking and planning.
The question that Universe26 faces is this: How can humans continue to thrive when economic models face the pressures of collapsing growth?
Universe26 seeks to create some answers to that question through the construction of enterprises that remain viable regardless of growth.
BeMall is an exploration in ecommerce that looks to create greater consumer agency in the market by connecting companies who care with customers who care.
These are companies that participate in B Corp certification, Fair Trade, 1% For The Planet, and other certifications of this kind. We want to celebrate the companies that are setting standards for themselves to be better for the health of our planet.
These are people who realize that daily consumption is necessary, and that their consumption choices drive change. We want to celebrate the people who are making conscious decisions to buy better, not just cheaper or flashier, for the health of our planet.
BeMall is working to index the products sold by companies that are becoming certified as cleaner, better operators. The vision is to create an online shopping experience where customers know that every brand, product, and experience offered is being produced by a company that is trying to be better for the planet.
BeMall has started indexing the products sold across North America online by B Corp certified brands. The site is live at thebemall.com, and there's a web app to search for certified products at app.thebemall.com. There are funding limitations at this stage as the venture is new, and support from technical and financial resources is welcome.
BeMall is set on a course to be non-profit. The mission is to connect companies and customers that have similar values, not to produce returns and profits. As the long-term game of global resource extraction and population declination plays out, we aspire to create a lasting enterprise that will not face the pressures of the profit incentive, but instead be able to adapt flexibly to the dynamics of the market - including the ability to shrink correspondingly with the number of consumers and producers in the market.
DateMap is a celebration of the process of connection. Whether it's your first date or 50th anniversary, we can all agree that great dates make for great memories, and we're crafting a collection of awesome outings for people to try the next time sparks fly.
DateMap has started creating lists of great places to visit and compiling them into curated dates that will let you and your special someone see the best of the town. The prototype site is live at mydatemap.com, though there are limitations in the technology that make it load slowly (better image caching and other speed improvements are planned).Â
DateMap is designed to be a participative, employee-owned company. The goal is to create a fantastic way for people to plan dates, and then to offer reservations and secret menu items (that we will co-create with participating locations) at the venues we promote for these great dates. The revenue model is based on selling the secret menu items in advance online while folks are planning their dates, then sharing that revenue with the venue we send people to. Our share of the revenue will be used to fund the business and pay dividends to the employees, who will also be the owners of the business.
